When the cherry blossoms arrive each spring in our Nation’s Capital, they are a living symbol of Japan and a sign of renewal. Our friendship with Japan is at the heart of Sakura Matsuri and everything that we do as the Japan-America Society.

For 50 years our visitors have come to Sakura Matsuri because they like Japan, its people, and its culture. This year’s Sakura Matsuri, our 51st festival, was unlike any other because of the tragedy that befell Japan on March 11.

We wanted the Japanese people to know that we stand with them in this time of great need. We are grateful to our visitors for supporting the efforts that we made at Sakura Matsuri to assist the relief and recovery effort in Japan.

Our volunteers raised almost $16,000 in donations for the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Fund.  Income from tickets sales will be used for recovery efforts. Some of our vendors and performers donated all or part of the profit from their sales. Visitors at the Children’s Corner made 1,215 paper cranes, which were transferred to Oshkosh by Gosh, which will donate the same number of items of children’s clothing to Japan.  

JASW provided a tent at the Sakura Matsuri for Japanese and American friends to sell merchandise, called “Hearts of Japan.” Proceeds from sales (almost $5,800) have been transferred to the Earthquake Donations account specially established by the Japanese Cabinet Office (http://www.cao.go.jp/gienkin/), from which they will be directly distributed to local governments in the areas most devastated by the earthquake and tsunami in northeast Japan to help those communities meet their immediate needs.

JASW also provided a tent to the Japanese American Student Union. They collected $778 in donations for Japan relief and also sold 100 T-shirts for $20 each, with profit going to Japan relief.

首都ワシントンに毎年必ず花を咲かせる桜は、日本とその再生の象徴です。また日米の友好は、さくらまつりのみならず、日米協会が年間を通して行うプログラム全ての目的そのものでもあります。

これまでの５０年間、さくらまつりを訪れる皆様からは、日本・日本人、そして日本文化が好きという声をたくさんいただいて参りました。そして第５１回目を迎えた今年、我々のさくらまつりは、３月１１日に日本に起こった大惨事を受け、通常とは異なる形での開催となりました。

それは、私たちの気持ちが、今大きな助けを必要としている日本の人たちに、常に共にあるということを知ってほしかったからであります。今回のさくらまつりで行われた支援活動にご協力くださった皆様には、我々一同大変感謝しております。

本協会のボランティアは会場内において、米国赤十字社へおよそ１６，０００ドルにも上る募金を集めました。また、入場料の収益は全額日本支援のための寄付金とさせていただきました。さくらまつりに参加した店舗の中には、全収益を寄付する店舗もありました。チルドレンコーナーにて子供たちによって作られた１，２１５羽の折鶴は、Oshkosh by Goshという会社に送られ、届いた折鶴と同じ数の子供服を被災地に寄付することになっています。

また、日本人とアメリカ人の有志によるHearts of Japanというブースも設けられました。そこでの売り上げ（およそ５，８００ドル）は、日本の内閣府によって特別に設立された震災義援金窓口（http://www.cao.go.jp/gienkin/）へと送られ、東北地方の特に地震・津波の被害の大きかった地域にて、人々の必要性に迅速に対応するための資金となります。日米学生連合（Japanese American Student Union）は、およそ７７８ドルの募金を集めたほか、Tシャツを売るなどして得た収益を義援金として寄付しました。
